Chapter 5. Not that type of jealousy?

“Love sees sharply, hatred sees even more sharp, but Jealousy sees the sharpest for it is love and hate at the same time.”(Arab proverb)

Dom felt a little foolish the next morning as he hadn’t told Matt how much he liked his performance. His friend seemed unaware of his qualities; Dom should have encouraged him more. Perhaps Matt would grow out of his extreme shyness with time?

There was also the case of having to start reading Ivanhoe unless Dom wanted a low mark at Literature. He tossed the book dismally into his leopard-print bag, wincing at the thought that he wouldn’t be able to hang out with the ‘cool band’ during break-times.

“So, brother, you won’t forget it, right?” Linda looked at Matt with sparkling eyes as they headed to the canteen.

“Err… but I told you I really don’t want to bring it to school. I’d die if anyone else read it.” Matt’s soft cheeks flushed as he avoided his sister’s look. At the entrance of the canteen, both of them surveyed the spacious room and found the two familiar figures they were looking for sitting at their usual table in the corner.

“Pleeeease, Matty, bring it sometime this week and you’ll just simply pass it to me in the break! It won’t seem odd to anybody that you’re handing a damn notebook to your sister!” She grabbed his arm gently and looked up at him with hope.

Matt gave in to Linda’s persistence; bringing a finger to his lips to signal her to keep it quiet, fearing that the information would be overheard. They dropped their bags on the ground and greeted Chris who was hungrily eating away at Dom’s portion after finishing off his own plate. Dom, on the other hand, was hidden behind the thick volume he was reading; Matt was a little disappointed because he was hoping he could read something from Dom’s face about their encounter the day before; a positive change that would be undeniable and that would confirm his connection maybe? He tried to peek at Dom from behind the book but only succeeded in falling off awkwardly from his chair. Luckily, he rose to his feet fast; the embarrassing moment passing unnoticed.

“Hello, Blondie, what are you doing here? Wizardholme turn you into a bookworm? Why aren’t you outside picking up the freshest rumours?” Linda’s playful tone thrilled the accosted boy while Matt and Chris looked at each other grinning widely, knowing that they would be witnessing an exciting duel of replies. Chris kissed his girlfriend’s cheek; showing how much he liked his new nickname.

“But don’t worry; I’m so kind that I will share you the latest news I’ve heard,” She lowered her voice, “So, apparently your Maths teacher, Miss Clear, is pregnant.” Linda looked expectantly at her friends with her wide, cerulean eyes, hoping that they would be falling off of their seat with this fresh gossip.

She may have impressed her boyfriend and brother but Dom just flicked his hand dismissively; he closed the book and smiled confidently.

“Tut, tut! You call that news?! I found out yesterday that Mr. Johnson is the father!”

Chris spilt his water and froze to the spot.

“What?! The PE teacher knocked her up?! Dude, that’s sick!”

Dom was enjoying his little victory when Linda narrowed her eyes at him.

“And why should we believe you? Like, what are you, the King of Gossip?”

The last words, even though unintended, pierced into both Matt’s and Dom’s heart. Dom’s deeds from six or so weeks ago were still fresh in both of the boys and this last remark didn’t pass unnoticed. Linda recognised the fact that she’d said something stupid and pretended to be searching for something in her bag.

“People just tell me things…”Dom muttered under his breath softly and returned to his reading matter. An unsettling silence enclosed over them; thick and dark like a creature of the night.

Linda wished the ground would open up so she could disappear. She was never very comfortable with expressing herself orally but rather through writing; the anxious girl pulled out a pen and started doodling on the table.

Noticing this, Matt took the writing material from her loose hand and added) random letters “CHRIDOMA” afterwards.

LICHRIDOMA

Linda stared at it with a blank expression, raising her glassy eyes when Chris cried out amusedly.

“What’s that? A fatal disease? Or a new heavy metal Finish band?” He laughed heartily, poking the lethargic Dom in the arm. Dom glared back at him but when his gaze fell on the smooth surface of the desk, his eyes brightened with joy. Linda still frowned and waited for the answer.

“You dummies!” He savoured in the guilty pleasure of knowing, “LInda, CHRIs, DOm, MAtt… see? It’s the combination of our names’ initial letters! Right, Matt?”

Matt looked proudly at Dom, nodding enthusiastically. Now that the table was marked, it would always be their haunt. They also agreed that ‘Licridoma’ should be the name of their gang. All the four of them laughed and gave each other high-fives sealing, with this gesture their precious friendship. However, a strong flash blinded them for a moment; they all looked in the direction of the light and saw a lean boy with dark hair holding a big, heavy camera.

“Ah, sorry…umm, hey guys… just thought you all looked so happy and I kinda wanted to capture that moment. I hope you’re not upset?” He tucked a tuft behind his ear; his eyes shining warmly at his younger schoolmates.

“Mate, you didn’t ask the superstars if you may take a picture of them but we’ll forgive you if you give us a copy of this photo.” Chris held out his hand, smiling friendly. “I’m Chris, nice to meet you.”

The boy grinned and shook the offered hand.

“My name’s Tom; I guess you can tell I’d like to become a photographer. People say I have a good eye so maybe you will become some huge stars one day.”

He winked and they waved each other goodbye as he nipped off to immortalise his next victims on camera; Tom didn’t have to go far though. A small group of giggling girls and macho boys imploded into the canteen. The one who caused all the hullabaloo was a tall girl with the fairest hair ever. Her pretty features highlighted her unusually big eyes which were almost translucently blue; the blindingly white attire completed perfectly her Ice Queen look.

“Jesus Christ! Who is that bird?” Dom asked, hypnotized by the sight.

“Hehe, so you DON’T know everything! Ha!” Chris smirked, “If you want to know she’s a new girl. Her family has just moved here from Sweden; I’m sure her name is Annette Svor… no, wait; she has a complicated name,” Dom pressed on eagerly to find out this new beauty’s name, “Annette Sverige! That’s it! Her father is a very important businessman. And by the way… she’s my classmate.” Inside Chris, the little testosterone hormones were bouncing at his manly pride, blinding him of three pairs of eyes which darkened with jealousy at his words.

When he patted Dom on the back, saying “Go for her!” with a cheeky smile, he succeeded in calming down the green-eyed monster in two of his friends. Linda pondered with the idea about slapping him, but instead she placed her right arm possessively on Chris’ broad shoulder. Dom nodded and put on his’ hunter mask’, his dusky eyes following closely Annette’s every movement. The girl must have felt someone staring at her because she looked over in Dom’s direction; after checking him out attentively, her appreciative gaze sent an open invitation to the animated boy.

Dom packed away his stuff in a flash and he didn’t even look back at his friends, who were gawping with shock as he shouted a hurried “See you later!”

“He still has a lot of things to learn in this aspect!” Linda snorted resentfully, “I thought that he was becoming nicer since hanging out with us, but look! Some fresh meat can turn his brain; she’s ruined our weeks’ efforts in a second!”

Matthew pouted his lips and looked bitterly at his sister; Chris patted their backs reassuringly, suggesting that Annette could be interesting for Dom just for a short time. He sensed though that both of the Bellamys were still smoldering with anger and annoyance.

* * * * *

In the afternoon, Matthew felt the burden of that day’s events to be unbearable; the constant rubbing of his temples not calming down his frantic ocean of thoughts. Acting on impulse, he took out his guitar, put on his black coat and exited the house. He didn’t have any particular place in mind; he just wanted to find a serene spot where no one could bother him. Important matters had to be contemplated.

The weather was perfect, not as chilly as the morning had been. Grandma’s house was off in the outskirts of the town and Matt used a shortcut, arriving in no more than six or so minutes in the middle of an outlying and comforting forest. Matt smiled, satisfied with the area and touched briefly the coarse bark of the trees with his fingertips; his head was looking up to admire the faint sunrays which filtered through the thickness of the foliage.

He went deeper and deeper, exploring the unknown territory until his eyes settled on a patch that stood out like an oasis. The small glade was inviting him with each of its blades of grass and leaves. In that moment, the weak sun succeeded in cascading through the clouds, illuminating the little piece of heaven with a golden aura. He almost fell to his knees but composed himself as he entered his new-found sacred sanctuary. There was also a big rock which served as a seat for the next hour. Matt couldn’t have been more pleased, his problems forgotten for a while. His fingers moved slowly on the taut strings of his guitar; the light melody involuntarily reminding him of Dominic.

Like his sister and Chris, he wasn’t happy about Annette’s appearance. Linda’s cutting remark, which sadly was true, only deepened his pain: their friendship even though a fresh one… didn’t help in bringing Dom back on the good path. Maybe he saw too much potential and goodness in him? He was fooled yet again but what brought Matthew to the border of madness, was that he couldn’t be cross with him. It was completely ridiculous, but every time he decided to stop talking to Dom or some other way of punishing him, Matt felt guilty. With a sharp cry, he dismissed this nonsense into the infinite forest.

A sneaking thought snuck into his naïve mind, knowing little of the poisonous ideas it would place between the normal thoughts. Matthew was well aware of the sentiment he felt when Dom looked so appreciatively at Annette. It was pure jealousy but he was quite sure that Linda and Chris felt the same. This was a “friend” jealousy… not that type of jealousy. This was something normal; after all they had done so much for Dom and then he chose that whor… ahem, girl instead of them. If she was a bi… big liar, then at least Dom would learn his lesson… but in the end, she might prove to be a cute, sweet girl; prejudicing was not the right thing to do.

Matthew didn’t want to jeopardise the deepening friendship between him and Dom; choosing rather to suffer with pain in the shadows.

Ah, so you will be traveling with your parents then? :) You will laugh but my mom and I also wanted to go on a trip to Bavaria (from the 9th September) but then the agency told us that it won't be held. :/

We decided to go here in Romania to a spa resort for a week :D :P That should be awesome as well!

But I really hope I will get some scholarship or something to the UK. Maybe not next summer but in 2 years? Who knows. :)

Nope, all by myself with about 30 other cadets from across the UK :D Awww, such a shame! I've been told it's beautiful, so looking forward to seeing the scenery. Not entirely looking forward to the four days of hill climbing, but I've got Belldom and whsipering Muse songs to myself to look forward to :P

I've never been to a spa O.o I'd love to go sometime! :P

Ooh, you should! The UK is awesome (man, I am such a patriot, the country technically should suck :P) It would be so cool, I'd love to meet up with you if you did come over :)

But, alas, the parents would have to know, and how we met, and... well... that could be ever so slightly awkward :P
