Review: Muse at Sziget festival on 15th August, Budapest

Oh, I don’t know if the title’s appropriate as I kind of present you the whole day. If you find it boring, please skip directly to the concert review.

 

 

Many of you might know how much I wanted to go to this festival as I haven’t seen Muse before even though this was my second time attending Sziget – it proved to be more special than the first experience. 

 

Where should I start? The day before the concert I traveled by train to Budapest. No problems at the border crossing point. Unfortunately, my friend from Hungary couldn’t come with me to the concert so I went with a guy, an ex-classmate. On Sunday morning the sky was half overcast, half sunny and I was worried because the TV had announced showers in the evening. Here’s a pic:

Zoli, my classmate, showed up in time and we took the tram. Lots of people entering/leaving the island (AN: sziget=island in Hungarian). We bought the tickets which are actually bracelets and I was totally thrilled about its purple colour. :P

 

So we entered the territory at around 11:30AM and decided to do something fun before going to the main stage. There were many tents where you could make bracelets, pins (haha, made one with Muse and one with a guitar), play and win all kind of stuffs.  I especially liked the Mental health tent where you were given 2 ribbons. On one you wrote your vice/biggest fear and you left it there as a sign of you surrendering it. The other ribbon kept your greatest ambition and you tied it to your wrist.

 

At 2PM we headed to the Main stage and I was quite shocked by the number of persons already standing there. I mean Muse were supposed to start at 9:30 PM. O.o We were “only” in the third row but we put on the ground our jackets and sat down. Meanwhile it started raining and I had to run and buy myself a raincoat. :P I’m glad I purchased it; it’s a useful piece and at least I wasn’t soaked. My friend and I ate our food and I noticed that people around me were exclusively Musers. There was a guy in a yellow t-shirt with the following text on it: Matt Bellamy is God and MUSE is my religion.

 

An hour later there were more and more people gathering though there was still nobody on the scene. I met 2 nice persons(a girl and a boy) who sat behind us. They  were from Croatia and we got on  so well probably because we traveled quite some hours to see our favourite band too and had lots of topics to discuss. Cheers if you read it, Croatian Musers! ;) An Ukrainian grandpa rock band started playing but most of us kept our seat.

 

Although things changed when the next band, Danko Jones (Canada), hit the stage. Some sissies tried to get in front of us so I chose to get up and protect my spot. Honestly, I didn’t really like Danko Jones’ songs but the singer was funny and entertained us greatly between songs. At one point, a girl lifted her top and she didn’t wear a bra… and imagine, her image was shown on the big screens! The crowd and the band pulled faces like: :O. There were 2 fans in the second row who were holding a banner and the singer asked for it and he posed with it.

 

What I found funny was that each band asked us: “Are you excited for Billy Talent/Kasabian/Muse?” and every time I shouted “HELL YEAH!”

 

Billy Talent started at 6PM and they electrified us a bit – people started pushing but it was gentle compared to the treatment I received later. It was their first time in Hungary and their show was probably a memorable experience for fans but I didn’t really like it. I only recognized two songs so I rather took pics.

 

The Kasabian gig!!! Unfortunately, I only started listening to their songs a few days before the festival but damn, they are so awesome!

First of all, I’m so happy that so many persons know their songs and I think the guys were surprised a bit. The singer, Tom, was excellent. He smiled a lot, bounced and communicated with the excited crowd. My favourite songs were Take aim, Fire and especially Underdog. I can’t put Club foot in that list because the crowd started behaving crazy during it… I was standing at the center-left part of the stage right in front of Jay, one of the guitarists. Hehe,  he noticed that I was taking lots of pics (I have a professional camera) and I showed him victory with my fingers and he smiled. After the band finished the song he made the same gesture at first with his left hand, then with his right hand. We were both grinning widely.

 

And that was not all! :D During Vlad the Impaler  he stopped playing and he stared in my direction. I wasn’t sure if he was looking at me because he wore sunglasses. So I stared back at him and we didn’t move for like two minutes… it was like a dream while I heard Serge singing ‘Get loose’. At the end he smiled again and I felt a bit dizzy. :P

 

And the last song… it’s hard to party when you know those would be the last minutes seeing them but I clapped and cheered as loudly as I could. The guys were thanking kindly, they are so modest! Tom came on our part of the stage as well and examined happily the crowd. I looked at Jay and waved goodbye smilingly. He did the same but I wasn’t convinced that he meant that to me until he pointed at me, flashed his gorgeous smile and showed me the V sign!!! <3 Oh god, it was such a heart-warming moment and I was squealing inside!

 

MUSE

 

Forgot to mention that I lost my friend during Club Foot but we agreed to meet at the entrance at the end of the concert.

From here Hell started. Idiot drunks from behind kept pushing, then there were some annoying crowd-surfers. When the roadies appeared on stage, people became even more agitated. Oh and Tom appeared on the stage for a few seconds and some screamed because they thought it was Matthew. He was wearing jeans and a white tee with some pattern on it. I must say he looked very good. :P Though I think I was the only one around there who recognized him. As I found out later the guys were late because of some technical issues therefore they left out Exogenesis part 1 of the setlist. :’(

UPRISING - It’s a bit shameful but I had to watch some videos on youtube. I wasn’t sure if I remembered correctly some details. So when our favourite English boys entered the stage everybody was screaming and pushing. At first I was frozen to the spot just trying to comprehend the fact that Matthew Bellamy was dancing RIGHT in front of me. When you think that only 5 meters were between us… frightening! O.o I still succeeded in taking a few pics after “recovering”. LOL And Dom… Dom was absolutely gorgeous! His hair, his radiant smile… not to mention how cool Chris was with the pipe in his mouth. SMBH – Obviously, this song is a fan favourite and I thought that I wouldn’t be able to bear any more the touches of sweaty bodies. *still makes me sick* Couldn’t they put on a t-shirt or something?! I also thought that I would fall on the ground and I’m not surprised that a lot of girls asked the bodyguards to take them out. I tried to make some shots of Chris but he was pretty far from me. Matt took off his glasses. :P

 

MoTP and NEW BORN – Sorry to say this but I can hardly remember anything about these songs. The pogo was AWFUL and I swear if the bodyguards wouldn’t have given us water I had probably fainted. :-/ Just know that Matt danced with his guitar in front and moved a lot. For NB he changed the black guitar for the Glitterati.

 

HYSTERIA – all the lights became red and it matched the song very well. I think during this song I was dragged back into the 5-6^th row. That was so much better! I was able to breath finally! :P So I chose to sing the lyrics and relax a bit. :)

 

NISCHE – Matt left the scene while Dom and Chris performed this song. The roadies prepared the piano for the next song.

 

UNITED STATES OF EURASIA – Ahhhh, it was great! I loved that people sang it along passionately. Hey, I could finally take some very clear pics! J Sorry, I’m just thinking with a photographer’s mind. Matt’s piano – wow, that’s a miracle! I love that its cover is translucent. The Oriental part which is otherwise my favourite was p0layed wonderfully! Bravo!

 

MK JAM – Matt left the scene while Dom moved to the lightning drums (so pweaty!). This jam is so cool and it was a total Domgasm for me! That man is so talented and gorgeous. Take a look:

 

UNDISCLOSED DESIRES – other big favourite. At the beginning there was a BellDom moment (my pic is blurry *iz sad*). Everybody was singing and I took some great pics while I was listening to this perfect song. I loved the fuchsia lights and I think Matt smiled for the first time. :)

RESISTANCE – It was beautiful but I still haven’t found a proper video on youtube. I think I was singing this the most loudly!!! LOL though at home I didn’t like it that much but it was so much better live. Hehe, I enjoyed staring at Matt’s talented fingers playing the double-neck guitar. :P *sighs dreamily*

 

TIME IS RUNNING OUT – Not so many things to say about this; people were crazy again and I had to be busy with protecting myself. Anyway,  it was sung and youngsters jumped etc

 

STARLIGHT – Whoa… I think everybody sang it! It was emotional and we were clapping. I believe Matt loved the warm reception of this song because he seemed so satisfied and at the end of the song he even spoke in Hungarian!!! He tried saying “köszi szépen" (=thanks a lot); it was a very kind gesture of him!

 

STOCKHOLM SYNDROME – I found it weird but the crowd wasn’t really rocking out on this song. O.o No problemo, at least I took tons of pics. :P The guys proved that they are masters of their instruments! Matt’s impressive riffs… at a moment his silver necklace was in his mouth and he was head banging like that! *rock star moment* The outro was drool-worthy! :D

 

At the end of this song I looked on my right and I was astonished when I found my friend there. Muse went off of the stage but I assured my friend that they wouldn’t leave without playing KoC… my heart almost stopped because they returned a bit late. :P

 

PLUG-IN BABY – I was rocking out with my friend and we sang it cheerfully enjoying every second. Matt went to the other part of the scene and offered for those who were cheering there a nice guitar-sex show. :P xD

 

KNIGHTS OF CYDONIA – Chris started playing the harmonica and my friend looked at me weirdly. Told him this is the intro for KoC and I believe everybody screamed and sang f..king loudly! Loved the lasers and the fumes but especially Matt’s gestures. Though he disappeared quite quickly after he ended the song. Dom was again very nice, came to the microphone and thanked us for being there! Hehe, we finally had a full view of his awesome wetsuit!!!!!

Thanks for this, it's always great to read the story of a gig from someone who was there (and so close to the front too,nice one!). Sadly I can't see your photos but I bet they are fab. It's a shame you couldn't have snapped Chris, his suit that night looked totally awesome :o

KOC is fucking awesome! Nothing beats that song! And they always keep it for the last!

Dom looks sexy in that suit of his. And his hair....*sighs happily* I want to bury myself in his hair!!!

Kasabian setlist seemed awesome! They played all the hits!
Told you they are an amazing band!

I could comment more but I don't want to make it boring and long!

By the way... I met at the concert a girl from the UK whose name was Emily. :D And she told me she didn't find tickets to Wembley that's why she came to Budapest. Well, she bought the weekly ticket but still...

Okay, so I finally got to read your festival review and I grinned through the whole thing. It sounds like you had a really great time even though there were some bad moments at the festival (boobs, sweaty people, not enough water).

I am so jealous of the amazing show it sounds like Muse put on! I cannot believe there was a Belldom moment before Undisclosed Desires. Do share, do share! :D How could people NOT rock out to Stockholm Syndrome? :o

Anyway, your pics are amazing, and I'm so glad you got to see them (and some Matt guitar sex, so jealous!).

Hihi, the BellDom moment was pretty funny! Matt went to Dom and whispered something in his ear and they smiled. But during UD Dom was SOOOO serious... or rather he was contemplating about what had Matt said earlier?! :P
