Chapter 1. Chapter 2. Chapter 3.

You are my Sun

Chapter 4. A confusing, unknown realm

“Music reveals to man an unknown realm, a world quite separate from the outer sensual world surrounding him, a world in which he leaves behind all precise feelings in order to embrace an inexpressible longing. . . .” (E. T. A. Hoffmann)

The middle of October had brought a chillier weather to the small town of Teignmouth. Despite people opting for warmer clothes to prevent the chill, this didn’t mean that their heart was also feeling the pleasant coziness; rather, it was a reflection of the cruel winter that came at this time of year; a bleak and dark environment. Although for some, things were certainly looking up.

Linda and Chris were now officially a couple; in fact the school’s cutest pair. Together, they were like two jigsaw pieces connected; the leaves of the same branch; the complementary of their partner. They really were like the perfect harmony between black and white.

Even though Linda’s parents weren’t too keen to this relationship at first, the continuous persuasion of Matt showed them that this was not your typical teenage relationship, which usually ends after a few weeks, but a very deep and serious one.
Moreover, the pair didn’t act like typical lovers; they were not “blinded” by love and they did not forget about their friends.

At the same time, Matthew and Dominic had become closer friends and naturally, they hung out a lot with Linda and Chris. By spending time together, Dom became aware of the surprising fact that Chris was a drummer himself, although only a beginner. This gave them both the chance to bond; they had a lot of topics to discuss, mainly Dom giving advice to Chris on how to improve his skills.

On the morning of October the 18th, Matt was calmly walking to the school; face buried in a thick book with his brown eyebrows rising up in surprise of what had he just read. He didn’t even notice the three cheerful youngsters on the other side of the road watching him. They found his concentrated face very amusing and giggled at the sight.

“You reading about aliens again, Matt? Here, look! I’ve captured two specimens for you!” Dom shouted across the road, laughing as Chris poked his arm.

“You could have looked for better ones; these seem a bit dodgy…”They crossed the road to join the now smiling Matt. Linda and Chris just rolled their eyes, both sighing whilst thinking, “They will never grow up”.

Dom was curious if he was right about Matt reading about extraterrestrial creatures. Holding the book closer, he read the title out:

Erich von Däniken: Chariots of the Gods?” He looked doubtingly at his friend wondering how on earth he could believe all the crazy theories in this book.

“Don’t look at me like that!” Matt retaliated, pulling the book back. “This Swiss man proved that aliens helped humanity at the beginning of the history. They built the great pyramids in Egypt.” He was very convinced about the justness of the theories and he continued enthusiastically gesturing with his hands. “How could the ancient Egyptians built the pyramids otherwise? They didn’t have modern equipment. Just think: the weight of each block of the Cheops pyramid was from twenty-five to eighty tonnes!”

“Well, Matt, I still don’t want to accept that aliens helped those poor Egyptian slaves. I’m sure they had intelligent engineers who came up with ingenious methods.”

“But…but!”

Linda and Chris listened to the two boys’ highly entertaining conversation; neither could help but burst out laughing when Matt claimed that humans were aided by creatures from Sirius.

“Oh, so that’s why you’re so weird!” Linda cried out; her laughter infectious to the others. “Hey you two, I’ll see you in the lunch break, yeah? I have to buy some notebooks.”She skipped off in the direction of the stationeries, dragging the still sleepy Chris with her.

As they reached the school, Dom went ahead and within seconds everybody turned in his direction; greeting him with big smiles with several of them even patting him on the back. He was used to his classmates’ friendliness; receiving it all with a confident smile. Matt, who had been walking behind him at the time, was shocked by his friend’s popularity; he couldn’t help but wonder: “Why is even talking with me when much cooler people would kill just to be his friend?”

He didn’t realize however, that many of the other students had been thinking that same thing. “Why is Dom keeping Bellamy beside him?” Most of them came to the conclusion that he was probably helping him with his homework or something. By now though, everybody had grown used to seeing them coming to school together or talking in the corridors.

During their last Literature lesson of the day, Matt was hypnotized by his kind teacher’s voice reading a text about the English romantic novels. His mind wandered through all kind of things: from the sandwich he ate in the morning, the pyramid-building aliens and then to Dom, who was blinking wearily, probably wishing the class to end. They both jumped up as they heard the ringing of the bells but the teacher soon cut in.

“Don’t forget that for next Friday you have to hand in an essay about English romanticism based on Walter Scott’s Ivanhoe. It should be at least five pages long. No arguing or excuses!” The students’ mouths hung wide open, hoping that they had misheard their teacher’s words.

“Ah, shit, I don’t have that book!” Dom started flailing nervously, flicking through his Literature textbook.

“Dom… I have two copies? If you want, I’ll lend you one, no worries.” Matt smiled shyly.

“Ah, thanks mate… you saved my life! Um, listen… can I come over later in the afternoon? I mean if I’m not disturbing anything…”

“No, of course not! I’ll see you later then!”

* * * * *

Matt was washing the dishes when he heard the doorbell ringing. He looked at the clock on the wall which read half past five before hurrying to the front door. The wooden door itself was like a mirror: on each of its sides, a flustered youth searching inside themselves for courage. Dom was feeling a bit restless as he waited for the door to open. He’d never visited Matt before and he was also afraid about meeting Mrs. Bellamy, Matt’s grandmother. He said to himself that everything was going to be alright and put a smile on his face, when he heard the sound of approaching footsteps.

“Hi there Matt!”

“Hey Dom! Come on in.”

Dom followed in behind Matt, entering the bright and cozy living room. He admired the old paintings hanging on the walls, each showing neatly drawn landscapes and still-life. Dom was also impressed by the huge bookcase in the corner which treasured hundreds of precious stories.

“Wow… you have lots of books.” Dom stated while he sat down on the sofa.

“Well, my grandma and I are both avid readers.” Matt giggled. “Look, I’ve already found you your book.” He handed Dom a beautiful edition of Ivanhoe, which Dom held close to his chest.

“Thank you so much!”

“Oh, I’m so impolite! Would you like a tea or some juice?” Matt asked while his cheeks flushed; “He must think I’m so rude!” Dom just smiled back and nodded his head.

“Juice would be nice, thank you.”

Matt headed to the kitchen when he heard Dom’s question:

“Are… yo-you alone?” Matt’s stomach tightened slightly; he thought he was the only who’d been feeling nervous but Dom was just the same. He smiled to him before easing Dom’s worry.

“Umm, yes. My grandmother went to put fresh flowers on grandpa’s grave.”

For a few minutes, Dom had been staring at the shiny object in front of the window, revealing a nice view of the garden. The mysterious object was Matt’s black piano; the instrument he would touch every day with his long fingers. An instrument which satisfied Matt’s insatiable need for music.

“Here you are.” His train of thought was interrupted by Matt’s voice as he came from the kitchen. He handed Dom a glass of orange juice hoping that his friend wouldn’t notice the trembling in his hand. They both sat silently taking small sips from their glass, the tension in the room growing, until Dom finally gathered up his courage to ask Matt something.

“Matt… would you… err, play something on the piano?” He gulped anxiously; still unbelieving that he had just asked such a thing. To be honest, Dom also had another question too, a really burning one. “Why didn’t you tell me that you can play the guitar?!” For the past few weeks, he’d been imagining himself asking Matt the question; wondering why he never shared the fact with Dom, who was feeling a little resentment in not knowing.

Matt choked a little on his drink; he was completely floored by the suddenness of the request.

“I’m not that good…”

“Please, I’d like to hear you playing.” Dom looked at him with a saddened expression, like a lost puppy. How could Matthew refuse him? He slowly walked to his beloved instrument and sat down in front of it while he heard Dom moving behind him, opting to seat himself at the left side of the piano.

“Oh god, oh god, please don’t let me go wrong! I don’t even know what to play… what if he doesn’t like it? What if he finds it boring? What if he says that music isn’t my thing? That I have no ears for music? Don’t screw it up, Matt, please don’t screw it up!”

He looked outside the tall window; a song came to his mind as he watched the wild gust blow through the bare branches of the cherry trees. He put his fingers on the ivory keys and automatically started playing the song he had loved ever since he was a child. A song that Beethoven composed for his lover, blending into the melody all the different feelings that grow in one’s heart when falling in love: the Für Elise.

The gentle song filled up the room almost like the sweet perfume of a spring flower. As the notes were played out, something clicked in Dom’s mind… yes, he’d heard this song before! His mother had a jewelry box which started playing the Für Elise every time it was opened. Matt himself began to unwind along with the music: at first he pressed the keys lightly and timidly, but the volume and the pianist’s self-confidence increased with every stroke.

During the piece, Matt even dared to look into Dom’s eyes which burnt with profound admiration and his smile encouraged Matt to continue. He nodded and wore a wide grin as he played a short, but very playful part. Dom was watching agape at his fast-moving hands which then slowed down to the well-known opening notes, playing no louder than that of a confession whispered in a lover’s ear…

Without a warning, the melody shifted dramatically; Matt’s left hand continuously playing an unsettling background noise while the fingers of his right hand expressed the inferior sides of love: fear, deception, jealousy… Matt was becoming part of the music; his whole body moving with the pace of the song like the delicate blades of grass which bowed to the symphony of even the slightest breeze.

As Matt lifted up his eyes, Dom saw a sweeping storm in his fervent blue orbs; a look that said “You stole something essential from me, my whole world was crushed and the only one to be blamed is you. You…” A chill came over him as Matt finished his performance with elegance, looking at Dom with an unworldly expression.

“I-it was… fantastic. You’ve got talent, Matthew.” Dom could barely whisper a response; the overwhelming sensation from the performance taking his breath away. Matt thanked Dom quietly, shortly anticipating an awkward silence in their conversation.

“I think I should go.” Dom stood up and left the room. He was putting on his coat when he turned back to Matt. “Hey…err, we have a rehearsal… me and my band on Friday? Would you… like to come and listen to us? We’re not playing this kind of music but you like rock as well, right?”

“Yeah, okay… I don’t think I have to go anywhere else. Thanks for your invitation.”

“You’re welcome…well, have a nice evening. Thank you for the book… and for the performance.” Dom didn’t know how to say goodbye very well but he finally held out his hand, Matt shook it with a smile on his face.

Did the end of their meeting calm down the boys? It certainly didn’t. Music is far more expressive than hundreds of words, stirring up feelings that one isn’t even aware of having. It can also bind two souls together, even if there is a great distance between them; it irresistibly pulls people together like a magnet. On that evening, Matt and Dom felt a strange giddiness, the unknown power of music leaving them more confused about one another than ever before.

I read it! Gahh the tension is rising! I love how they've made friends and can argue about aliens but Dom turns to mush when trying to 'vaguely' ask him out haha.

I listened to the song at the end and I got slight chills imagining the scene again, ooh it's good :)

When will they realise that it's getting to be more then friendship? You keep us in suspense as always :)

Don't ever stop Brigi *hugs* :) x

I think I wouldn't have either the courage to ask Matt that... :P Then Dom would have to explain how did he find out and such.

Be patient... or at least try to! It's not easy to realize that you feel more for your friend, is it?

I'm glad you liked the song and thanks for your support! *hugs*

Yes, I know that feeling all too well... :(
Hmm, which gives me yet another idea for DMFT - using personal experience... hmmm... haha, you keep giving me all these ideas unintentionally :L

Which I'm half way through the fourth chapter of, by the way ;) If I finish it today I'll be rather happy :D

*hugs back* this made a lovely break to writing hehe :)

Jesus, you're so quick! But that's good because I love DMFT (I read it again in the morning xD). I still can't imagine how can I inspire you unintentionally. :P Oh well.

I'm only quick because I've been avoiding doing everything for the last week. This will probably be the last chapter in about a month lol!

And you make me think of where I want the characters to go, how to develop, and it makes me think of what I want to do next. I admit, where the chapter's going in the minute I wouldn't have even dreamed of, but meh :P

I'm so happy to see this update! (as always)
Ahh the feelings are building up, but not so obviously. Its very gradual. *waits patiently*

The piano playing scene was beautiful. Dom probably wanted to say so many things, but he couldn't. Probably a little later he will.

Music is so important. I think that's the only thing that will eventually bring them closer.

Update soon!!! I wanna know what happens!!!
*hugs*

Remember our conversation, right? Told you I want things to progress slowly... like in reality.

You're absolutely right; music connects them at first. And Dom... yeah, he was in a fever.

Okay, okay I'll try to update xD (though with this visiting it will be difficult).

Aye, the Fur Elise is an incredible piece... I'm glad you picked that in the end. I really enjoyed the idea of Matt performing for Dom like that... like Beethoven for Eliza. ^_^

Matt was becoming part of the music; his whole body moving with the pace of the song like the delicate blades of grass which bowed to the symphony of even the slightest breeze

That was my favourite line, the imagery it created was beautiful and it really made my heart warm.

*blushes* I'm terribly sorry once again for taking so long... I'll aim to do much better in the future.

I love this story and I adored this chapter greatly *hugs*

This was a great update! The quote at the beginning of this chapter was beautiful--and so true. I feel that way about Muse, actually...

...anyway, I'm loving how the little tiny pieces of Matt and Dom's feelings for one another are falling into place. I hope it won't belong until they realize that what they feel for one another is more than just friendship. That will turn things upside-down at school for sure!

Wow, thank you, I didn't know that you're reading my story! :D

I love the quote as well! You know I came across it in my mother tongue and I was desperate when I couldn't find it in English. I felt like a detective then...

Oh oh, I don't want to reveal too much but things won't go so smoothly... :P

Thank you again for commenting!

I am reading your fic, and I'm enjoying it a ton!

I'd never heard that quote before, but it's beautiful...I bet you did feel like a detective! For English not being your native language, you have a fantastic, fantastic grasp on it! :D

This was awesome. You chose a nice music to be played by Matt in this. And I loved how it describes so many things.

Also, you're right. Music does mess with people's feelings in ways that other things can't.

"“Why is even talking with me when much cooler people would kill just to be his friend?”" this is a thing I have often wondered myself, still do.

"Matt asked while his cheeks flushed" I have such a soft spot for flushed Matt :).

"Dom was watching agape at his fast-moving hands which then slowed down to the well-known opening notes, playing no louder than that of a confession whispered in a lover’s ear…" yes, dear god yes! I could watch Matt play piano all day.

"Did the end of their meeting calm down the boys? It certainly didn’t. Music is far more expressive than hundreds of words, stirring up feelings that one isn’t even aware of having. It can also bind two souls together, even if there is a great distance between them; it irresistibly pulls people together like a magnet. On that evening, Matt and Dom felt a strange giddiness, the unknown power of music leaving them more confused about one another than ever before." Beautiful, simply beautiful.

I love how both boys are so insecure and don't know yet why that is exactly. Nice pace.

Haha, it was destiny, and anyway, once Dom got to know Matt he was mesmerised. xD

Matt needs to play the piano more, I'm such a sucker for it!
