You are my Sun

Chapter 2. Astounding events

“For everything you have missed, you have gained something else, and for everything you gain, you lose something else.” (Ralph Waldo Emerson)

Before Dom could think more about what Matt was hiding in his notebook, the well-known figure of the form teacher entered the classroom. Several of the rambunctious students caught her severe expression and hastily ran back to their seats.

“Good morning, class!”

“Good morning, Mrs. Green!” answered the children.

“Here are your timetables; please Anne, could you hand them out for me?” She pulled a handful of papers out her briefcase and gave them to the girl in the front row. The tall woman, dressed in a black costume smiled briefly before starting her speech.

“Now then, I’ve got some changes for you all. Last year, you’ve been allowed to sit where you want but since a lot of your teachers have complained about our noisier students chatting during your lessons.” she looked accusingly at the guilty persons, who shuffled in their seats nervously. “Because of this… I have decided to change the seating order.”

The class booed as sign of their disapproval; Matt began to fear his nice position he had gotten so accustomed to. He didn’t want anybody to bother him. He loved sitting alone and anyway; he wasn’t in good terms with anybody. How could he bear having a stranger beside him for a whole year?!

“So, let me see… Brian? Change your place with Pat and…” The teacher thumbed through the register, swapping the students across the room. As she really started to mix up the class, Dom thought that he would remain where he was and so started to smirk confidently at the others. Unfortunately, the teacher caught this and with a smug smile, she added:

“Dominic, move next to Matthew.”

The smile froze on Dom’s face. His heart skipped a beat; his face grew pale as he looked sadly at his friends. Before leaving his sulking mates, he waved them goodbye then slowly made his way to his new seat. Dom noticed that Matt was as nervous as him; this was an awkward situation for both of them.

The rest of the day was irritable; Matt didn’t even move, trying to not acknowledge his new neighbour whose presence intimidated him. Dom was so glad that they had a short day he could not bear to sit in that dim corner anymore. After all, he was one of the most popular guys in the school; how could he be shoved aside just like that! There was no way he was going to let them get away with that; he needed a plan to get his old seat… and luckily, Dom knew just how to do that. By spreading gossip about Matt, he was sure that his timid neighbour would run to their form teacher, begging her to move Dom back. ‘Mwahaha, it’s perfect!’ Dom thought, although there was one problem. Matt is as innocent as they come, but not only because of his childlike smile; he was a top-grade student, in fact, he was the class’ genius. However, this wasn’t going to stop Dom as his imagination was already running wild with ideas…

* * * * *

With the ringing of the bells, break-time had begun; the younger students were running up and down the playground while the popular students from the upper grades were hanging around in groups in the tidy corridors. Linda had been trying to muscle her way in on the category of “cool people”. Her natural charm surely helped her and her schoolmates appreciated her sense of humour.
It was the 5th of September and Linda was casually flirting with Chris. Just as he was about to invite her to the cinema that afternoon, a student’s voice called out behind their back:

“Bellamy?! That wanker?”

Linda turned furiously in the direction of the voice and saw the mocking faces of some boys; one of which looked like Dominic Howard, who she’d been told about by her new friends. She was tempted to teach them a lesson and she clenched her fists, but Chris prevented her from going to the hick who had mocked her family. He didn’t know how to calm her down so he blabbed out:

“They were talking about your brother.”

“But… why are they talking this way about Matt? Chris, you have to tell me immediately!”

“Eh well, it’s stupid really…” Chris blushed as he uttered the words. “I don’t believe the gossip anyway.”

“Please, just tell me the truth, okay… he’s my brother, I deserve to know.”

“Okay… it is rumoured that Matthew is not as perfect as he seems… apparently he’s gay.” Chris gulped. “Also his classmates say that he reads porn magazines during the lessons and that’s the real reason he wants to sit by himself.” He rapidly added, so as to not upset his hopefully future girlfriend, “But I don’t think that’s true.”

Linda’s eyes widened at the news, “Well, I didn’t notice anything weird at him… no, no those boys must be wrong!” Although she tried to accept the facts coolly, suspicions had already started forming in her mind. Matt had always been quite feminine…and he was so sensitive. Linda couldn’t remember ever seeing him with a girl but then, she’d thought that Matt was just too shy to converse with them.

For the rest of the long and boring lessons, Linda was easily distracted by the revelations earlier. She had to talk with his brother; she had to check if the gossips were true. If they proved to be wrong she would happily slap Dominic right in front of their schoolmates; the image of that confident idiot who had bad-mouthed her brother was difficult to remove. In order to find out the truth, she waited for him in front of the school entrance. Matt smiled as he saw her and she waved him over.

“Hey, Matt. I was just thinking we should go home together, after all, you are my bodyguard! How was your day?”

“Bodyguard indeed, you’ve been alright so far! My day? Hmmm, it was weird… some of my classmates were acting bizarrely.” Linda was sure this was the consequence of the nasty gossip that was being spread and so she questioned him further.

“Really? What were they doing?” She narrowed her eyes and Matt’s face turned red at the enquiry.

“Err…they made some obscene gestures… and somebody drew male genitals on my desk. Buggers! Luckily, it was in pencil, so I got rid of it. Can we…umm, let’s talk about something else, okay?”

“That’s awful…bro, can I ask you something?” Linda didn’t dare to look in Matt’s eyes; those kind eyes that could do no wrong.

“Go ahead.”

“Are you… do you have something to hide from me? You know…do you have a dark secret or something?”Matt burst out laughing which caught Linda by surprise.

“Haha, you’re funny. Dark secret? Yes, I have.” Linda’s heart skipped a beat; Matt continued in a hushed voice. “Don’t tell anyone, but my little sister is a witch!”

“Maaaatt!!! You…you” Linda was becoming sulky. “I’m serious. Do you have anything to confess… about your sexual orientation?”

It was the boy’s turn to remain speechless. “ Why do you ask that?”

Linda concentrated on the ground, avoiding Matt’s stare. “Well, I’m not sure when it started but… there’s a rumour going round that you’re, you know, gay.”

“WHAT? Linda, who told you this? Please tell me you didn’t fall for such rubbish.”

“I think your classmates were spreading it around; I recognised Robert, Mike and Dominic in the circle but I’m not sure about the others. Though, I got the impression that Dom was the ringleader; he was grinning like a dunce when I saw him in the middle of the popular group.”

Matt’s face saddened; it seemed that his new seating partner couldn’t accept the situation... Dominic Howard launched a campaign against him. Matt couldn’t think of anything which could have annoyed Dom, this fight was probably revenge against the form-teacher’s decision earlier. Matt was determined not to give up to his fellow student’s pressure but to bear it with honour; he would fight with the weapons of kindness. Dom might have won the battle but Matt would win the war!

* * * * *

Dom woke up with a slight headache next morning. He dressed up but something didn’t look quite right… should he put on his new yellow hoodie? Maybe the green jeans would match better with the rock t-shirt he’d chosen? Shoving the more colourful options aside, he opted for all-black attire. Hopefully, this outfit would emit ‘Leave me alone, I’m pissed off!’ signals. He went down to the kitchen where his mum was already preparing the breakfast.

“Morning, Mom! I have a rehearsal today with the band. So I’ll be home at around six, ‘kay?”

“Dom, we need to talk.” His mother’s voice was serious, which was unusual. “Do you seriously think that you can achieve anything with music? Why don’t you choose medicine or science? You’re also good at languages, you should become a translator.”

“Mom, I told you that I’d hate to work for someone… music gives me freedom.”

“But freedom won’t shower you with money, you know? You have to earn your living. There’s no guarantee that you’ll be successful as a musician.”

“Mom, enough. I’ve got a splitting headache; I don’t need any further aggravation from you!”

“Alright, son, but remember, you can’t always brush aside your problems.”

Dom entered the school and his irritability was reflected by his face. It seemed that everybody knew to avoid him; a pissed-off Dom was a dangerous person. Despite the fact he knew he looked grumpy, he would have liked to receive some encouraging friendly words or some reassuring looks but he got none. He entered the class unnoticed and grudgingly sat down beside Matt.

“Hello, Dom.” Dom turned his head in wonder and looked blankly at the boy. Why was he talking to him?

“Hi” he replied finally.

A few minutes later, the Maths teacher walked into the room and began the lesson; Algebra. Due to the plentiful amount of complicated equations and the increasing pain in his head, Dom made several mistakes in his work.

“Shit!” He whispered as he made another one again, this was ridiculous. He searched for an eraser in his pencilbox but he didn’t find it… until slender fingers slid the wanted object across the table.
“Wow…that’s nice of him…” thought Dom, but his migraine was getting worse which made him agitated. He started banging his pencil against the table and he was not even aware of it; the gruff voice of his teacher woke him up from his dull trance.

“It seems everyone, that Mister Howard is completely bored with simultaneous equations. Perhaps it’s a waste of his precious time and he already knows it all… so, can you tell us the final result?”

Dom’s face couldn’t be more confused; Matt had noticed that since he’d entered the class that something was not right with him. He wasn’t going to be cruel and just leave Dom stumped; he had a golden heart…

“Nine.”

“Nine?”Dom pronounced it loudly as his face slowly became red under the teacher’s glare.

“Oh… hmph. Very well.” said the teacher, returning to the whiteboard. Dom watched attentively as Matt wrote the elegant numbers in his notebook. He had a lump in his throat but he had to say it, otherwise he’d regret it later.

“Thanks, Matt. I’ve had a bad day and…”

“Don’t worry about it, happens to us all. Glad I could be of help.” Matt smiled before turning back to his notebook; Touché!

* * * * *

Just as he’d promised, Dom was heading home at around 6 o’clock; the sky was starting to darken, along with his thoughts. His band had gotten into a fight… a big one. The problem was Ricky, the guitarist; this caricature of a person (Dom couldn’t label him otherwise) was having pompous ideas about fame. In his mind, ‘music equals lots of money’ which was not the case of the other members.
Dom gazed up hopefully for a few moments at the shiny stars that were started to appear in the sky. He longed for celestial help; he longed for the days of innocence when everything was so simple...

To clear his thoughts, Dom decided not to follow the usual route but chose a longer one; take his mind off things. He was trudging along but after a few minutes he caught a glimpse of Matt… with a guitar on his back?! The little prick could play the guitar and he didn’t even know about this? He hid behind a tree and listened how Matt greeted two older guys.

“Hey Matt. Come on, the band’s waiting for you…”

“Sorry, I had tons of homework.”

How surprising! Matt was even in a band but Dom never heard him showing off with this fact. How very weird… it looked as if he had to re-evaluate his opinion about his supposedly timid desk mate.
